What is an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)?

An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a structured evaluation of the potential environmental effects of a proposed project or development. It involves processes like screening, scoping, and preparation of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) to assess air, water, noise, and ecological impacts, and recommend mitigation measures.

What laws are enforced by pollution control boards?

Pollution Control Boards (CPCB and GPCB) enforce several acts and rules, including:

  • Water Act 1974 & amendments

  • Air Act 1981

  • Environment Protection Act 1986

  • Rules on hazardous substances, biomedical waste, plastic waste, e‑waste, battery waste, and coastal regulations.

What is environmental auditing?

Environmental auditing measures how well a project or company complies with standards such as ISO 14001, environmental authorizations, or internal Environmental Management Plans (EMP). It evaluates both adherence to regulations and performance against goals.

Do I need a Health & Safety policy for my workplace?

Yes. In India, factory units with 10+ power-operated or 20+ non-powered workers are required under the Factories Act to have a written Health & Safety policy. It should include:

  • Management’s safety commitment (signed & dated)

  • Organizational responsibilities

  • Day-to-day safety arrangements (fire, training, PPE, chemical handling, contractors, etc.)
